Nine foreigners were apprehended for violating Chinese laws governing residence during a police sweep in Luohu District on 13th Jan 2009.
They were taken in by police for further questioning after they had failed to report their place of residence to police within a specified time or not carrying a passport. They were from Pakistan, Australia, Britain, Malaysia, India and Ghana.
Police reminded foreigners coming to China to report to police if they intend to stay in the city for more than 24 hours. For minor offenses such as not carrying passport, a foreigner could be fine 500rmb. But for violations such as illegal immigration or working without a permit, offenders can be fined and repatriated to their country of origin.
