Good news to those who wish to study in the UK! On 28th March, the British Minister for Education and Skills (DFES) approved the International Graduates Scheme (IGS). It will replace the Science and Engineering Graduates Scheme (SEGS) and thus provide more opportunities for overseas students to work in UK after graduation. From 1st May 2007, all foreign graduates who obtain a bachelor degree or above from a recognized advanced educational institution can stay in the UK for one year to work, regardless of their scores. The applicants can submit their application while their student visa is still valid with other relevant materials and the application fee to the Home Office.
If the applicant has left the UK, he/she can also submit the application within 12 months after graduation, given that he/she has obtained the entry clearance to return to the UK from the British Embassy in his/her country of residence. After working one year in the UK in accordance with the relevant regulations, the student may be eligible to stay in the UK under visa categories for technical immigration, high-tech immigration, employment, study or business.
The scheme is welcomed by many well known UK universities and agencies for study abroad. This policy shows the UK government’s support for the overseas education industry and international students, enabling Chinese students to obtain valuable working experience and even to develop their own career in the UK. The growing number of scholarships offered by UK universities will also benefit Chinese students. It is expected that the new policy will greatly enhance the UK’s overall competence in education and increase the popularity of the UK for Chinese students.
